Many of you will already know about the wonderful work Mike Camm and others are doing on the Tutukaka Coast, creating sanctuaries where Kiwi can be safely released to live and breed.
Kiwi Coast is an even bigger concept, a concept of a "Kiwi Corridor" along our beautiful eastern coastline, from Bream Head up to the Hihi Peninsula in the Far North.
The idea is that community-led protection of Kiwi and their habitat in this corridor will allow Kiwi sanctuaries to eventually spread and join up, right along our coast.
Kiwi naturally roam for quite a distance, so it makes sense to provide an environment where they can go about their business, and we in return could end up hearing Kiwi calls on a regular basis, and know we had had a hand in saving this endangered icon bird. By providing that Kiwi environment we would also be improving the health of our native forests, by controlling pests and dogs
It's a big project, backed by the NZ Landcare Trust, WWF-NZ, and the Northland Regional Council.
